Interactive E-lEarning
The Projects…
These simulation courses were designed to immerse learners in medical scenarios where they could “learn by doing.” I created 3D backgrounds and assets for these courses, but my greater role was as an idea generator, collaborator, and problem-solver, helping shape how the courses came together. These courses would not exist if not for the first course, where I proposed creating a 3D operating room to show proper layout of all the equipment at each stage of surgery. Originally they were looking into using medical illustration for the course, but we created a hybrid approach, combining 3D environments with medical illustration inspired by visual novel games. This approach allowed the illustrator to focus on what she did best, while making additional imagery of the room and tools quick and easy to produce.
The Impact
The success of the operating room course led to a series of simulations where I worked alongside artists, writers, subject matter experts, and developers. Over time, we produced five full simulation courses and additional imagery for several others. One of these, A Day in the Life: An IDD Perspective, won a Gold Brandon Hall Group Excellence in Technology Award (2022). These projects showed the value of combining 3D visualization with instructional design to create engaging and immersive courses.
My Role
Each course presented new challenges. I worked closely with the developers to understand what they could achieve using Articulate 360 to create their courses. I built assets that could be moved and interacted with for the operating room training, produced 360 images to create interactive spaces for trauma-informed care, and produced first-person animations to immerse learners in scenarios. In larger projects, I also organized asset handoffs across contributors to keep the workflow efficient and clear. These simulations remain some of my most rewarding work, that were both challenging and exiting to create.
